Christmas may be all about the food but let’s face it, New Year is all about the drinks! Many of us like to toast the dawning of a new year with a celebratory glass of fizz, but it seems there are a whole new wave of tipples waiting to knock the traditional favourite off the top spot.

Check out our predictions for the top alcohol trends to look out for in 2018…

Hit the rocks: The rise in popularity of sparkling wines shows no sign of abating, but look out for a selection of sparkling wines specifically designed to be served on ice. Alcoholic drink trends to look out for in 2018Purists may shudder at this development but dozens of Prosecco, Champagne and Cava producers, among them Moet and Canti, are getting in on the act. Expect to see them on the shelves next year.

Make mine a large one: Once the preserve of the rich and famous, magnums of wine and Champagne have soared in popularity. Global sales of Prosecco magnums rose by a staggering 1,000% last year and even budget supermarkets are getting in on the act with their own ranges of 1.5L bottles.

Dressing it up: Forget the simplicity of ice and a slice, elaborate garnishes on G&Ts and cocktails are becoming ever more popular. From juniper berries to fresh raspberries, chillies to shrimps (yes really!), it seems the trend for imaginative garnish is here to stay.

Embrace hybrids: Can’t decide between whisky and beer? You may not have to if the current crop of collaborations proves a winning combination. Some microbreweries have started ageing their beers in whisky barrels, while the world-famous Glenfiddich is finishing some of its whisky in IPA casks to give it a hoppy flavour.

The joy of gin: The gin market has seen huge growth in recent years. Can its popularity be sustained? You bet. Expect to see even more flavoured gins as well as a more diverse range of mixers, such as ginger ale and tonics flavoured with the likes of elderflower and rhubarb. Personalised gins are also expected to take off with restaurants and bars offering their own in-house varieties. Here at Deans Place our extensive gin menu continues to grow and grow (admittedly, shrimp gin has yet to be included . . .).
