The History of Afternoon Tea
The quintessential custom of afternoon tea was introduced by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford. Evening meals were served fashionable late in the early 19 century, and by four o’clock in the afternoon the Duchess would ask that a tea tray be brought to her boudoir. Social hostesses quickly picked up on the idea and the practice became respectable enough to move it into the drawing room. Before long all of fashionable society were sipping tea and nibbling sandwiches in the middle of the afternoon.
